What type of expertise and training does a gastroenterologist need?
Normally, more serious complaints you make to your family doctor regarding digestive issues such as frequent abdominal pain, nausea, heartburn or something else affecting your digestive system will be referred out to a Gastroenterologist (GI). Your physician might recommend some lifestyle changes or try to treat the condition with over-the-counter or prescription drugs. But if the problems persist, they can recommend you consult a gastroenterologist.
