Scott A. Larson, MD, PhD

Scott A. Larson, M.D., Ph.D. was born in Fargo, North Dakota and grew up in the piney woods of east Texas. He obtained his Masters in Biotechnology from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX and Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He graduated medical school from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Dr. Larson completed his internal medicine residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. While there, his peers presented him with the ‘Attitude & Commitment to Excellence Award’ in 2011. He finished fellowship in Gastroenterology from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2014. He has presented research at Presidential Plenary sessions for the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and Digestive Disease Week (DDW) in the areas of intestinal malabsorption (Celiac Disease) and intestinal hyperpermeability including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Dr. Larson is dedicated to his local communities as well, and was chosen as the winner of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Community Awareness Award- creating an educational public awareness video on colon cancer screening entitled “Help Catch a Killer” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X54suUtgsq8).

Since completing fellowship, Dr. Larson has diligently served as an Assistant Professor for the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Larson is trained GI procedures including Upper Endoscopy (EGD), Colonoscopy, Capsule Endoscopy, SmartPill™ motility testing, Hydrogen Breath Testing, and High Resolution Esophageal Manometry. He provides comprehensive care for patients with gastrointestinal as well as liver issues, and has specific interests in peptic ulcer disease, acid reflux (GERD), esophageal motility (swallowing difficulties), changes in bowel function (constipation/diarrhea), and IBS.

Dr. Larson believes in the patient-physician therapeutic alliance and practices the Mayo Clinic founding philosophy that “The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered…” (Dr. W.J. Mayo). When not caring for patients, Dr. Larson enjoys spending time with family, church, traveling, trying new restaurants, and fishing.

Dr. Larson is currently seeing patients in our North Houston and Woodlands offices.
