Joseph Usta, MD, was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in Aramco, on an American compound in Dhahran Saudi Arabia. He completed his undergraduate at the University of Arizona prior to graduating medical school at the American University of Beirut.
He completed a year of pancreatic cell transplant research at Emory University in Atlanta GA, before relocating to Phoenix, Arizona where he completed his internal Medicine training at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Usta completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterolgy at the esteemed Banner University Medical Center, also in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the years, Dr. Usta served as an Assistant Professor for both the University of Arizona and Creighton Medical School where he greatly enjoyed training medical students and residents. He has served on numerous Quality Improvement, and Research Committees and is recognized by the American College of Physicians (ACP) as a "Rising Star". He received the Presidential Award at the 2012 American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) Annual Meeting, and recently presented to attendees of the 2015 American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) Annual Scientific Meeting, his clinical research on the association between Barrett's Esophagus and Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam Veterans.
Dr. Usta is trained in all general GI procedures including Upper Endoscopy (EGD), Colonoscopy, and Capsule Endoscopy. He has a specific interest in esophageal disorders including, Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD), swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia), and Barrett’s Esophagus. He is interested in studying Esophageal Acidity (pH) and Esophageal Pressures (Manometry). Dr. Usta is also trained in managing Biliary disorders and performs endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Dr. Usta has never lived outside of the desert, but is looking forward to living near the lakes, trees, and all the green that Texas has to offer. He plans on fishing, kayaking and enjoying his young family as much as possible. His optimistic views on life, his permanent smile, and his ability to make you laugh will go a long way in healing many of your gastroenterology disorders. He is very excited to start his new career in the greater Houston Texas region.
